四十歳、紀元前五一二年、魯の昭公三十年。孔子は魯にいた。「四十にして惑わず」（『論語』為政）。ここで言う「惑わず」とは、おおよそ而立した時に確立した世界観、人生観が不動のものになった事を指していると思われる。
