三十四歳、紀元前五一八年、魯の昭公二十四年。孟僖子が今にも死ぬところであり、子の孟懿子と南宮敬叔に孔子から礼を学ぶように言いつけた(『春秋左氏伝』昭公七年)。孔子は魯の君主の支持を得て、南宮敬叔と周に赴いて、その文物や制度を視察し、大きな収穫を得た。
